Hi, I'm Su!
I am a BWY yoga teacher (500 hour diploma which included Ayurveda, postures, breathing practices and meditation). I have completed additional teacher training in Yoga Nidra, BWY Gentle Years chair yoga, Restorative Yoga, Menopause Yoga, and yoga for stress, burnout and chronic fatigue.
I am trained in emergency first aid and fully insured, and have been teaching since March 2019.
My yoga journey started with meditation, then I incorporated yoga nidra into my yoga practice in 2003 which really helped with stress – I felt more relaxed and I had respite from my busy mind.
I started practising physical yoga more seriously in 2009 after a running related knee injury. Before that I had attended classes in a more ad hoc way and some home practice. After my knee injury yoga helped me regain strength and gave me a physical challenge when I couldn't run.
Since then yoga (and more recently Ayurveda) has been the foundation for my physical and mental health and wellbeing, and my practice has evolved over the years in response to the needs of my body and as I have learnt more about how to calm my nervous system.
Over 20 years in a demanding corporate office job led to lower back stiffness, which was really helped by gentle movement in my yoga practice. I often struggled to switch off, but yoga practices give us the tools to calm the nervous system by working with the body and breath, resulting in a calmer mind.
When I became ill with symptoms of burnout, frozen shoulders and tinnitus, alongside symptoms of peri-menopause I realised I needed to change my yoga practice to better support my healing journey, and I turned to restorative classes and back to yoga nidra to really focus on deep relaxation and recovery. Sometimes we just need more rest and relaxation and less doing! I have taken additional teacher training in these areas so that I can share these wonderful practices with you.
Whenever I have had a physical issue I find that yoga is a fantastic way to reconnect with the rest of my body in a positive way... it's often easy to feel focused on the area of our body that is causing us difficulty, and yoga helps us to focus on our whole body.
I hope that by sharing this you can see that yoga really is for everybody - we don't need a certain size, shape, or age of body, and we don't need to be fit or flexible. The benefits of yoga can be achieved through a variety of different yoga practices... it's about finding the right kind of class to best suit your needs.
When I am not practising, teaching or studying yoga I enjoy being outside in nature, where I can slow down, be present and calm my mind.
